Bobby Ancell`s first signing when he became manager in 1952, Blairhall Colliery`s George O`Brien was only 16 years and 316 days old when he made his debut in a 4-1 defeat at Arbroath.

His tanner ba` skills and lack of inches would have cast him as an archetypal Scottish winger but the powerful shot he possessed in either foot made him an ideal inside-right.

Very popular at East End, his performances in the top flight attracted the interest of other clubs and in March 1957 he joined Leeds United for a fee of £6,000. He then signed for Southampton, fulfilling his potential by scoring a remarkable 154 goals in 243 league matches.
